Funny Facebook status history

This is the third and final entry in my series related to the rise of the funny Facebook status as a marketing tool, and what you need to know about it in order to harness its powers for your business. To see more on the subject, check our archives.

Companies now had a large base of users signed up as ‘fans’ to their products and services. It meant that they could communicate with their followers directly, using a medium which their fans used daily. They could get into the minds of their supporters by placing strategic messages in their Facebook status and have it beamed across to their home pages, however there was a catch.

For a Facebook status to become successful, it needs to have a certain amount of interest generated by the fans themselves. This means that they need to do one of two things in order to promote their messages – either ‘comment’ on the status or click the ‘like’ button (which is similar to a ‘ding’ or vote up button). So how could companies make sure that people did this? The answer was in humour.

The funny Facebook status was born, and with it a whole slew of marketing officials whose job it was to create a message which people would react to and click. When they commented on this marketing material, it in a sense went viral and quickly spread across the network and subsequently across the internet. It was a big discovery for companies, and one which would lead them to invest more and more time and money in Facebook.
